I was quite taken with Shin's Archangel trilogy. Shin's great achievement in that previous series was the impressive reality of the world and characters, but unfortunately this retelling of Jane Eyre never reached the same level. There were aspects of the story that were more appealing to me when compared to the original Jane Eyre. Shin lent the story a persuasive, feminist bent that worked well with the material and made the choices of the characters less chair-shiftingly uncomfortable, but the dynamics and story never quite grabbed me.
